Commission process

Painting can be many things. I make no claim that one of its many manifestations is more important than any other. It can be argued perhaps that through the vehicle of portraiture, painting has the opportunity to operate close to its full potential. When it is imbued with palpable and psychological energy, a portrait delivers an undeniable, if not profound impact - the viewer is linked with subject and painter in a web of identity and empathy that pushes us toward an understanding of what it means to be, to see, and to be seen. Establishing this tangible, energetic connection between people is the ultimate purpose of my work. It is undoubtedly a mysterious enterprise where the target is illusive and the practice is demanding and humbling, but one worthy of full commitment - for even when the goal is not fully realized, the effort toward it can produce intoxicating results

From first conversations to hanging the portrait at its final destination, the commission process should be enjoyable, exciting, and collaborative.
Here is a list of some of the key points:
-Initial conversations via phone or in person discussing such things as occasion, subject, background, mood, size, timeline, and budget. Moving forward, the artist and client sign a contract.
-In person photo shoot with artist and subject . This takes several hours and may include a color study. I find meeting the subject to be a very important aspect of the process. It allows me to get a feel for the person's energy and personality, things that are essential to bring out in the painting. If such a meeting is impossible I am willing to work from a client’s photograph that I approve. The client covers the cost of travel expenses unless within a fifty mile radius of my studio. The first half of the agreed upon fee is due.
-We agree upon one or more images from the photoshoot that are suitable as source material for the portrait.
-Back in my South Dartmouth studio I begin work on the painting. The client is welcome to visit the studio at agreed upon times. I also send image updates once things are underway. Interestingly, many clients enjoy waiting until the portrait is complete to see it.
-My work is very detailed but most portraits that fall within the normal range of complexity are finished within one to two months.
-The work is delivered. The client is responsible for the cost of shipping unless the point of delivery is within a fifty mile radius. The second half of the fee is due.
